Hover your mouse over the core icon (the shield). It will then highlight every other province on the map where they have a core on.
That would effectively be their territory if you released them as a vassal.
Hope that's clear.
Do all possible releasable vassals that have cores already have them on the map? In other words, there are vassals possible that have yet to exist in the game, right? Like Styria for example. Do their cores already show even though they have not existed yet? I could look, but I'm at work at the mo.
But seriously, not the biggest concern if you're careful about it. They also need to occupy a province of the correct culture which is not protected by an active fort, so that gives you some room to manoeuvre.
