Of course this is also being adjusted by other modifiers.
But make sure that your forts are uptodate, because otherwise they will need very few siege ticks.
But if you play wide, forts are much less useful in the typical late game, because you will be so big and expanding so fast that you can't maintain a good defense line and if you fight your wars in a controlled manner, the AI won't siege many forts and the forts which they do siege matter very little, because you will have so many of them, unless you delete them all. If you delete them all, which is a valid strategy, the AI would not get to siege any of your forts(assuming you control the war well enough so that they can't reach your capital), so fort defense won't matter at all.
Thanks both of you guys! I usually expand slowly and steady so that won't be a problem. Gonna try this.
