If your ally is faster than you, try to siege as many provinces as possible until your opponent is completely sieged and wait. Your ally will seperate peace out after some time and normally, as long as they don't have many provinces sieged and no claims, they won't take any provinces. So you can siege them and take whatever you want.
There are 2 solutions:
* Don t ask portugal for help when you start the war.
* Occupy areas before Portugal does.
Unless Portugal peaces out early you get to decide what lands they get if you are the warleader.
One thing that I have noticed is that if your ally is sieging a province that you want, you can move a army that is bigger than what they have sieging and they usually move out of the way to let you continue the siege. That usually happens in my games.
