If you are new to this type of game though, it's a very good idea to take a look at some videos, streams, peruse the wiki and so forth for a few days/weeks before you jump into it. You don't want to drop too much money on something that will take a very long time to get to grips with through just playing if this preliminary research will show you that you aren't really going to enjoy it.
Yes, it's a good game in many ways, but it can get frustrating and is very involved, and you really ought to go in aware of this and prepared for it.
I do. I've put almost 6000 hours into EU4. I've played it more than my second through fifth most-played games combined. And the value per entertainment dollar it has provided me is enormous.
If you're the sort of person who thinks a 30 hour game is too long, who bounces from one title to another, who has never gotten totally sucked into an MMO for more than a year, who doesn't obsess about learning all the in's and out's of a title you truly love, then yes, subscribing to any game is a mistake. But don't generalize what's right for you and say it's right for everyone. It isn't.
I'd also say you don't need the DLC. It gives more options in game, and most guides are written assuming you have the DLC, but it is perfectly fun without any DLC. Plus, having fewer options makes it easier to learn the game. I'd recommend playing a game without any DLC before you get the subscription (if you go that route).
It is my understanding that one can subscribe, and opt out of an automatic renewal.
I don't know how to do it though. Maybe ask around.
One of the worst is that every nation in the world techs up at the same rate so in 1700 every nation will have the same tech.
I play meiou and taxes and its far more fun. Plus i think it only needs 1 or 2 of the dlc
But then you get hit by several neighbours at once and you lose everything you had and you are back at square one. Its so frustrating. So at that point its either you start again from scratch with a new game, or you continue with the present game and try to build up again.
Its just a bit of a circular game and winning is not very easy even on normal difficulty. Once you get cut down to size it really puts you off playing again. In that case you dont want to have spent a fortune on the game if you are not the sort of person who will continue to play after such a setback.
I think you can only find this out by playing the game for around 40-50 hrs.
When you get better at the game, this won't happen. Your number one job as any nation is to assemble an alliance so strong that none of your potential enemies will ever dare to attack you. That means you make and break alliances all game as nations lose usefulness and become targets instead. But the key point is power: you want your web to terrify everyone else.
I literally can't remember the last time I heard the sound that means someone declared war on me. It's been years.
The game is really fun and it's not as complex as it seems, there are a bunch of buttons but if you understand the basics, it's quite stray forward.
I love the diplo in this game and the cycle between institution, ideas technology etc. And the Colonizing system making the WHOLE world connected is so good, despite being really simple. In CK3 you don't care what happens elsewhere, neither in Imperator, neither in Stellaris. In HOI4 you do but it's different. Have fun! Hope you get to enjoy it. I really doubt this game is going to die after EU5 even if EU5 ends up being really good, because it's going to be quite different if it's not going to be mana heavy. There is a reason why this games has a more consistent playerbase.
