OH NO said hungary and lithuania when they picked similar event choices.

but yeah there should be a warning
France's new mission tree include a mission that instantly inherits Burgundy for them, and as long as you own your starting territory they immediately fulfill the requirements for it. Evidently they didn't think to make a check preventing that from happening if a player controls Burgundy, like they did for other missions and events of a similar nature.

That said, it makes a bit of sense for them to have nerfed it somehow; being able to instantly and freely integrate every French, Dutch/Flemish, and HRE subject you have by voluntarily choosing to become a subject yourself felt like more of an exploit than anything. Rather powerful rewards for what realistically would have been an instant "I lose" for Burgundy, at the cost of one independence war.

Ok So i either become a pu under Austria with a high probability of never join the hre then or what else? What should I do if I want to join the hre?
If you want to join the HRE, pick the option to remain independent. The HRE Emperor will send you an ultimatum to release the Lowlands, but unless they hate you you should be able to just pick the option "Grant the Great Privilege", instantly inheriting your Low Countries subjects instead in exchange for a Burghers estate privilege that gives those provinces high autonomy until you revoke it. France will probably declare war on you, but if you played your cards right in the early game you should already have effectively dismantled them.

Once the Inheritance crisis is over, you should be able to enter the HRE pretty much for free through the reward for the mission "Secure the Succession". Worst-case scenario, you'll have to suck up to the Emperor for a little while to ensure they let you in. Joining the HRE is going to be pretty painful until you become Emperor, however, as you'll be forcibly locked to Duchy government rank and will suffer Governing Capacity issues just from your starting territory, let alone the subjects you've integrated (and will continue to integrate).

just played a game where I as Burgundy was allied with Austria, Took the "Grant the Great Privilege" and Austria attacked me, We were allies in a war with the French at the time, I survived, but made it a point to make Austria go poof after.

This thread illustrates an important point: if you're Googling for strategy tips, ignore the old ones. There was a time, many patches back, when it was a good idea for Burgundy to pick the union with France option. You inherited all of your subjects and, if you'd set things up right, you got to immediately fight a very easy independence war.

This strategy got more risky a while ago, and it's outright suicide now. Take home message: the game changes. Make sure your strategies change with it as needed.

I mean, theoretically you could launch your independence war the INSTANT you accept becoming a junior partner to avoid issues, but you'd have to have set things up perfectly with France's vassals and allies too. I wouldn't like to bet on your chances.

Or you could try to grab a province in Normandy out from under France's nose in advance - if they don't control all of Normandy, they don't get to continue the missions resulting in your integration.

At the end of the day it's still RNG, they can always choose to screw you over for their own personal benefit. All you can do is tilt the odds as heavily in your favor as possible.

As far as i can see Austria really likes to attack me after i grant the great privilege, does it always happen?
