One loan is too many for me. LOANS ARE EVIL! THEY SOAK UP YOUR INCOME!

I nearly forgot to mention that you have to repay more than the value of the loan you took out if you decide to repay it early. So lower maintenance of armies/navies and mothball forts if youre losing money. You could take out as many loans as you wish if youre making 20 ducats per month. Just make sure you are still getting some income.

When I play EU4, I usually take out loans if my monthly income is at least +0.50 ducats per month, and if a few loans won't cause me 5 ducats in expenses...

I think I had 30 at one point

I played a multiplayer game with some guys once. The country I picked, as I soon discovered, was 4.5k ducats in debt. The nice players helped me out and then we later came, saw, and felt.

I remember being 4000 ducats in debt as England in 1460. It was an MP game. So as usual, everyone went overboard. It took me 60 years to pay it off, along with some nice gifts from Spain who put a bunch of diplo points into La Mancha.

5k as France. Playing MP to help my friend out and he stepped on the wrong toes, so I had to spam mercs.

How many years did it take to pay off?

One. My friend had stockpiled a ♥♥♥♥ ton of ducats. I'm not entirely sure why.

Yeah. In my England game, Spain gave me about 1000 to 1,500 ducats, along with around 500 from a few other people. The rest I had to scrounge up myself.

I can't remember how many loans it was but once as Britain I took out enough loans that I was in a deficit even with all heavies and forts mothballed and army maintenance all the way down. I don't even think it was that many honestly but I couldnt afford any of it because of the loans. So I did what made sense to me at the time and that was force myself to go bankrupt by hiring a crap ton of mercenaries and then disbanding them when they're finished and doing that until I went bankrupt. I was likely to go bankrupt at some point so I forced it as early as I could. Sure my morale and everything else was crap for ten years, sure I got declared on and couldn't fight because of this but I felt like it was the best thing that could happen for me. In the wars I got declared on by Spain and gave them a province or two and released some British, Irish, and/or Scottish minors but I could get all of them back at a later date so I wasn't worried.

I believe that was the first time I went bankrupt by my own choice instead of it happening naturally over time. The other time I went bankrupt not by choice was as a custom nation in the Americas and that was when I realized you couldn't colonize if you're bankrupt. Both situations were interesting learning opportunities I feel. In fact I think everyone should go bankrupt at least once in this game to know how it feels like. It's pretty awful if it was something you weren't planning at all and actually have to fight but it can be exactly what you need depending on the situation. I certainly don't recommend it if you're surrounded by hostile nations.

Wow, great stories, thanks! I'm new to EU4 and I was 1800 in debt after a war with France and Muscovy so I just restarted because I thought it was hopeless.

When you go bankrupt is all your debt forgiven along with all the modifier penalties?

All debt is lost, however your military capabilities is totally destroyed. Your morale for both the navy and army tank, and I think it actuall dismisses some troops. It also increases unrest in all provinces and reduces stability, legitimacy, and prestige quite heavy. You want to avoid going bankrupt.

Bankrupcy is... bad. Very, very bad.

I think 3 loans is a good rule of thumb, possibly more if you have Economy idea group or can use Papal influence to reduce interest.

In my last game as Portugal, i recovered from two 30-loans in a row without going bankrupt. I had to protect my North African provinces for the first one and against Aragon for the second, constantly spamming mercs for both very costly wars. My economy was doing great though, making way over 70 Ducats a month, interests and corruption included. I repaid in what seemed like no time(ish). I can't remember the total amounts but the last few loans i took were around 600 Ducats a pop, iirc.
