I'm not saying you need to start by snagging Byzantium. I'm saying to avoid the Ottomans and blob out elsewhere until you're big enough to take them on. Eat your way down to Cape and then back north up the Ivory Coast. Colonize your way to the East Indies and Australia. Take India's coastline and feed half the world's trade back to your home node. Etc.
You have the disadvantage of having picked a challenging start, but it's still not an impossible one.
I thought you said you were starting as a minor?
Coptic Ethiopia can easily ally every major European power, it should be no problem getting enough allies to run over Ottomans.
Better yet, if you get big enough to rival the Mamluks you can probably ally the Ottomans. Build up favors, call them into every war you fight, take a bunch of Mamluk land, and don't give them any. Blob at their expense and give them nothing.
Exactly this. Ethiopia is a regional power that's perfectly positioned to explode in size. Take over all of sub-Saharan Africa, India, southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Australia. Then you can just obliterate the Ottomans with a nation that's massively stronger and richer than they are. It's like I said earlier:
I play on Ironman, but normal difficulty. I'm generally focused on getting the achievements (currently, I have all of them). Once I get them all after a new patch adds more, I experiment with nations that don't have any, or try new ways to get old achievements, or explore a mission tree I haven't completed before, or whatever.
Depends on the nation you play , If your playing in a developed area AE is going to be very high like Holland but if you play in Africa just say then you able to take more for less AE because most areas are not developed.
Now they rivaled me but I got to beat up the ottomans a bit
But this game doesn't have that. There's no easy way to dismantle a state by killing a single person. Might have something to do with the time period, set during the age of sail and industrial revolution rather than the dark ages and middle ages.
Most fun I had was doing this with duels. Played as tribal Irish, and when the Norse conquered random counties next to me joined a warrior lodge. Then just spent my time bullying Umayyad sultans until I could duel them to death.
Best of all, the character I was doing this on was a female ruler who kept it up well into her 80s.
Not at all. It's perfectly possible to ignore them and focus on simply getting bigger and stronger than they are. There's no deadline.
