Is there a limit to number of colonies a nation can have? If so wher can this be found?

There isn't really a limit as far as I know. But going over your current colonist number will drastically increase the costs colonies cause. Even with quite the rich country you will probably not be able to afford more than 4 or 5 additional colonies.

Let's clarify. You have a certain number of colonists who establish colonies. Those colonies cost money to build. When they finish, they become a province. With 5 provinces in a colonial region, they become a colonial nation separate from you. If not in a colonial region, they will remain your provinces.

So, there is no limit on the colonies you can fund, as long as you have money. There is no limit to the number of provinces. There is no limit on the number of colonial nations.

As fot the limit of colonies without going bankrupt, Russia I think can go to 5 (2 from Exploration Ideas, 1 from Expansion Ideas, 1 from Nation Ideas, and 1 from Policy that requires both Exploration and Expansion Ideas +1 diplomatic power a month)

Your limit is determined by your number of Colonists, for clarification of the Idea stuff.

You can recall your colonists after they have arrived and set up the colony so you can send them elsewhere. Having more colonies than you have colonists increases the upkeep of your colonies.

The number of colonists you have is a soft limit.
If you have one colony more than you have colonists that last colony will cost double the mainteneance. The 2nd one over your limit will cost 5 times as much, the 3rd colony 10 times as much, the 4th 17times, and the 5th 26 times as much.

So it depends on your economy, but especially during colonial wars it can very quickly get out of hand.

Yeah in wars like that I always wait until the last possible second to take the colony, preferably not even occupying it since colonist goes away when I do that. So much easier to expand when you not only put your opponents back but also leap forward.

As Spain I have kept GB alive simple because they keep colonizing a lot and my initial strategy of focusing on Europe put me behind on it enough that I want to get back top. With luck I will eventually inherit Scotland which also has colonies here and there. It happened with Ireland after all.
