Funj not forming
It's 1540, and the nation of Funj hasn't popped into existence yet. I'm trying to get the Golden Horn achievement, where that uninhabited area has a couple of provinces I need that usually belong to that nation. Am I going to have to colonize that area myself, or is there an absolute will-form-by date for that tag?

"Golden Horn" achievement hasn't any time restraints. You will need to colonize the unknown areas. Your culture needs to be Somali. You also need to hold two Gold provinces that yield 10 income each. Kaffa and Damot are the ones to get. Not sure if Funj has anything to do with the achievement but it probably hasn't been discovered by you.

I have visibility on El Obeid, Tegali, Waylula, and Fazughli, which are all usually Funj cores. I can see the borders of Wadai, so I can see there are no other nations between myself (Somalia) and Wadai. I'm familiar with the requirements for the achievement. My question is if Funj is bugged, since it's supposed to form after 1500 with a 180 month mean time to happen, and it's 540 months later.

I don't think their is a bug with Funj not forming. But, I don't see why Funj has anything to do with the achievement.

I can't be bothered to search up that specific event but mtth is only the length of time where it would happen 50% of the time on average. It's also entirely possible that there are mtth modifiers making it longer or requirements that aren't met.

It'll show up eventually. Sure, it's quite improbable for the event not to have fired in 40 years as opposed to around 15, but even the wildest improbabilities will eventually occur with thousands of players playing for thousands of hours.

Eventually I gave up on waiting to take the province by conquest and took explo to colonize Fazughli. Achievement done. Then stuck around until 1556, still no Funj, not sure if I want to stay in and grind for I Don't Like Sand, or bail for a new run.

If I could take the province by conquest, I don't need a colonist. Two of the empty provinces needed for the achievement get frontiers when you form Somalia, but not the one in the north.

Ah, that's why it didn't appear. The entire Kurdufan area must be empty for the event to fire, so when you settled two of the three provinces by forming Somalia, you blocked the event.

Kurdufan is still empty, it's the Jubba area that gets settled. But it might be something along those lines. Maybe one of the nations in there started a colony and lost it before I was able to see it, or some other condition got violated. Or maybe it's just a real outlier on an exponential or Poisson distribution, like the Reformation not happening until the 1530s sometimes. It's all good.

"I Don't Like Sand" is quite easy starting as the Mamluks. You start with a ton of desert and high development, can easily conquer more, and can feed all the provinces that aren't to a vassal when you're ready to trigger the achievement. I got it about a century faster with the Mamluks than the people who recommend Ajuuraan. Sure, Ajuuraan gets an estate privilege that helps, but they start so weak that it slows them waaaaaaay down.

So, just out of curiosity, has it appeared yet?

No, it never did. At least, it didn't before I finished the achievement and moved on.

Well, I'm guessing something in the code got confused, or you managed to beat the odds on probability way more than can be expected. Hey though - you got the cheevo so whoo-hoo!
