Looting not worth it?

Each infantry gets .1 ducats/month from looting. But the cost of the infantry is .25/month.

Looting sounds like net loss? Am I missing something?

Its just some small cash, just like embargo coastlines. It was not meant to pay the army maintenance. It devastates the enemy provinces also.

It's not meant to completely pay off the expense of maintaining that army. It's just a minor income supplement sometimes while you're at war. The real money comes in the peace deal afterwards.

Horses do it better, turning a profit at 0.25 maintenance to 0.3 looting. The mechanic is better used by hordes who get increased looting speeds and reduction in cavalry costs. Hordes can maintain their army off looting as long as you have provinces that you can loot.

Extra money never hurts playing as anyone else though. Just split your horses off when your infantry is besieging a fort for some extra pocket money.

The base maintenance for cavalry is 0.5 though.

@OP you're not paying your army to loot though. You're paying them to win the war. Looting is effectively free money, you'd be paying the army the same regardless of them looting or not. If you're hiring troops and starting wars solely to loot, then yeah I guess it's a loss, but nobody does that.

I find its only really worth it as a horde. they get buffs to raiding speed and loot available, making high dev provinces have 20+ in loot, and ive even seen upwards of 50 on the 40 dev provinces. Really helps out early game since most of the hordes have no economy and are strapped for cash from spamming expensive cav, it helps keep you afloat and keeps horde unity high

I mainly only loot if i’m finishing a siege and need to wait for it to finish. or i can’t peace out for coalition reasons. basically i don’t go out of my way to loot
