Spain used to be half as many provinces are they are now.
You may also want to check the user modding forum on the official forums for advice or to see if there are any mods of the type out there.
My opinion of course.
Yeah it should work, but gets really complicated probably because we have new trade goods, monuments and perhaps specific events related to provinces as well. Plus I don't think there were states/territories/trade companies etc before a certain point. So it will be a lot of work even with that.
Yeah, that's why I said there'd still be a fair bit of work. Of course it also depends on how far back he has to go to get a map he can live with. Trade companies have been around for quite a while, states not quite as long but they aren't exactly recent additions either unlike the ridiculous numbers of tags and provinces that were added in 1.31 just over a year ago...
I wouldn't hate going back to the 1.1 map although I did really like the North Atlantic trade node era...
Well then you'd miss out on Trent, which is the single best country to play in this game
