WTF: The game opens a webbrowser and has to be killed
Disclaimer: I got the game on the Epic Store. Hope it's alright to post here.

To reproduce the problem:
Start the game.
Click on Singleplayer.
Click on Back.

At this point the game minimizes, throwing me back to the Windows desktop. A webbrowser opens with the Epic Store login page. The game doesn't seem to have crashed though, but I can't get back into the game either. It has to be killed with the task manager.

A friend of mine confirmed this behaviour on his machine. Is this normal? What is this about? Does the Steam version do something similar? How to avoid this?

The steam version doesn't do that. What you usually happens when you click on back in the single player menu (or back to menu while you are in the game) is that the game restarts itself. This is done to avoid bugs which happened in before this behavior was implemented.
My guess would be that the epic version doesn't correctly preserve which account you are using through the restart and that's why it redirects you to the login page. This might be an automatic behavior by the epic library which the game uses(probably to verify DLC ownership).
If I understood your problem correctly, it only happens when you go back to the menu. So you can avoid it by exiting the game and starting it from epic again. The only difference to going back to the menu would be that you will get the launcher again and have to click play there.

That sounds like a driver or hardware problem. Maybe you can record what the bluescreen says and ask the official tech support about that.

Don't use Epic.

On the other hand you no doubt got the game for free on Epic a few weeks ago. Why complain over stuff you got for free?

I'm pretty sure its a problem with epic. Never had anything happen to me when I had a cracked version, but as soon as I get the epic version I get constant BSOD or crashes

If you clicked the epic fail icon in the main menu this gonna keep happen until you restart the game. Ignore that button completely and just play the game

Of course the BSOD gets triggered by eu4/epic. But AFAIK a blue screen indicates a fatal system error and no program should be able to cause it if your drivers, OS and hardware are working correctly and don't contain any bugs. The separation between user mode and kernel mode in windows versions since NT/XP should prevent normal programs from doing anything which could cause such an error. That's why I think that there is an underlying problem which should be addressed.
