"But be careful, as when condottieri are rented out they can not fight in wars of their mother country until the arrangement has been cancelled (condottieri can only fight enemies of the recipient), which takes a minimum of 18 months. Make sure there are no enemies preparing a war before renting out condottieri. AI nations consider the fact that condottieri have been rented out when calculating relative strength."
It's one of several reasons why I almost never rent out my troops.
I never rent my troops out either.
Remember that renting out units is equivalent to not having them as far as AI calculation is concerned, so enemy AI will see you as weaker.
NEVER rent out forces that you feel you will need because until the war is over or 1 year commitment is up, you will not have access to them for personal defenses
Personally, I rent out my units a lot and get around the risk by having extremely powerful allies to discourage hostile action against me.
The only times I've done so is when I was trying for the achievement but I haven't figured out the trick yet... :/
