WOW i just found out you can't cancel condottieri
I got DoW and there was no bloody button to push and take my troops back to defend my bloody 3 province land and got full annexed. That's gonna be it for tonight, not in a mood to restart.

A DLC to fix the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ oversight perhaps?!

It's always worked like this and is deliberate. Condottieri are serving as mercenaries and are under contract. You can't break the contract and call them home until after it expires. As the wiki says:

"But be careful, as when condottieri are rented out they can not fight in wars of their mother country until the arrangement has been cancelled (condottieri can only fight enemies of the recipient), which takes a minimum of 18 months. Make sure there are no enemies preparing a war before renting out condottieri. AI nations consider the fact that condottieri have been rented out when calculating relative strength."

It's one of several reasons why I almost never rent out my troops.

this is why you keep your forts activated especially if you rent condottieri

you can cancel after 1 year, if you dont think you can be without them that long dont send them away or get an ally

I never rent my troops out either.
It is not an oversight, its to prevent players from exploiting it by renting them out and then canceling because you get a down payment of 1 year expenses for renting them out.

Remember that renting out units is equivalent to not having them as far as AI calculation is concerned, so enemy AI will see you as weaker.

NEVER rent out forces that you feel you will need because until the war is over or 1 year commitment is up, you will not have access to them for personal defenses

Personally, I rent out my units a lot and get around the risk by having extremely powerful allies to discourage hostile action against me.

The only times I've done so is when I was trying for the achievement but I haven't figured out the trick yet... :/

The White Company achievement - "Join a war against a nation that you hire out condottieri to.". As wiki explains, and as far I know this works with 1.31.x too, wait for call to arms message from your ally, keep this open while paused, now offer condottieri to one of your allies war enemies for 0 ducats, they are likely to accept, then accept call to arms and fight against your own condottieri. If I remember correctly, you actually have to battle your condottieri too.
