What difficulty/mode will you play - Normal/Ironman or something else? That's a key first question before then setting up a plan.
BTW I dont think you can take the ideas & traditions of a tag you form as a custom nation, so you will keep your custom ideas anyway.
If you choose a Theocracy or Republic, you would also be able to stack another 20% morale of Armies through a reform and the respective military idea of the government type. I generally use Monastic Order/Crusader State or Dutch Republic.
With 40% Morale of Armies you should surpass everyone in game in regard to army quality, except the ones who stacked the modifier too.
The other ideas depend on your gameplan. The military ones can be used with every nation.
For example, maybe you want to dabble in Ming, and see how that plays out in the Very Easy to Normal range, just to get a feel for the region.
Or maybe a "chill out" yet think-outside-the-box game by starting in Hawaii on the Big Island and conquer the islands and then expand into the Pacific and beyond (even west coast America).
What I would not recommend, if you're going Custom, is don't place yourself in the middle of HRE, whatever you do, as there can be way too many glitches in that setup and location due to the situation, as I've experienced game-breaking bugs before trying to start Custom inside HRE provincial area.
South American start can be interesting, since it is typically not as inhabited as central and north america.
Want a highly difficult but interesting experience? Start your custom nation in Greenland. Problem is, you'll end up with CNs if you get 5+ provinces in any Colonial Region so it always whittles away your total province count. You have to reverse the colonization mindset also, such as going back eastward at Africa or such. Almost mandatory that you get Bermuda as a starting province also (or colonize it before Europeans).
There's some crazy setups you can do once you go "anywhere" on the map. But don't be shy about turning the difficulty down to Easy or Very Easy for an odd location start such as Greenland, because you simply can't compete in some setups unless the game is leveraged toward more player advantage.
If you're having money problems then trade would be a good idea, if you don't like trading then production is the next best thing (still, though, I usually don't go for those ideas).
Another decently fun thing i found is, if your king is wellconnected(20% advisor cost)
And you get -20% advisor cost(culture matching and normal), you end up with day 1 -60% advisor cost modifier.
Any event that gives a half price advisor means, that advisor can be raised to lvl5 and cost like 1 gold a month still.
