Get your capital unto a coast and then develope it to 30 or 35. This can be done with other institutions too, when they are already started. But you need a DLC to develope a province if i recall correctly.

Edit: The coast thing is not needed for that, its just a better to have your capital at a coast as Kongo.

If you want institutions, just develope a province until it get it. For africa it should be around 30-35.

The whole developing capital and move it to a coast is just an advice for playing Kongo.

Also colonize next to a European power - most likely Portugal or Castile. You get the bonus of being next to a province that has the institution already.
As Kongo you will probably get Colonialism, Feudialism, then Renaissance in that order.

if you have and keep 100+ rep with Portugal, Kongo gets a bunch of events that can rapidly spread several institutions. Though Ideally, you'll want to vassal hop over and get feudalism off of Kiliwa within the first 15 or so years of the game, as it's quicker over all than waiting or rushing contact with Portugal.

I never played Kongo, but it might be like the first nations of america, you need a neighbour with feudalism to unlock it even if you developp all the way

Okay, I know this is old, but if you’re playing Kongo and looking for advice, on December 11th (you cannot wait! If any of these nations get an ally you are completely screwed) declare a No-CB war on one of the Swahili minors. They all have Feudalism. “But fetus, I can’t core the Swahili coast!” Well of course you can’t. But if you dec one without any allies, the other Swahili minors will get hungry and declare war on that nation too. So what you do is vassalize the one that you originally declared war on, then get pulled into a war with the other nations. Because of the way that vassals work, you will be able to core the provinces you take off of these nations. I used this to get Feudalism in 1452 in my Kongo run.
