Lift excommunication?
How do I go about this? I'm playing as England and France excommuncated me. They no longer have control of the curia so I assume this will be re-evaluated but I don't see an option to ask for it.

It gets lifted whenever your ruler changes.

Befriend with current curia nation and they sometime lift it

If you got the DLC you can remove your ruler and it will get lifted. It's the only way to actively guarantee it gets lifted.

In future try to keep Papal State opinion of you positive, as you can only be excommunicated if they dislike you.

Should also point out that excommunication isn't really that big of a deal anyways. In my Milan>Italy game I was excommunicated for pretty much the entire game.

It does suck for prestige though. Anyway, one weird thing, I can still claim defender of the faith even while excommunicated. Also three cardinals. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I think the concept is it's not your country itself that's excommunicated, just it's ruler.
