The usual idea groups are all good for you, no need for exploration, influence if you want to vassal feed, quality, offensive, defensive, admin, humanist or religious, trade or econ if you are dieing for cash...
quantity is not a bad idea to get more chance to become the leader.
I agree that it is a bit tricky. Finally took it in my latest Swe-run, I immediatly followed up with declaring war on the new emperor and 2 small electors to get ruina imperii allowing me to steamroll the northern german coast :)
I timed another Russia war wrong and the Leagues started while I was at war. I was winning but wanted a decisive victory to secure my eastern front forever. That worked (I deliberately let Russia form and everytime the truce ran out I pushed my border east, thanks to the newly colonized Siberian frontier provinces, I think in total 10 Deus Vults and one Imperialism between Moscow and the Pacific), but otherwise it was a mistake:
By the time I finished the war Austria's allies had already entered the Catholic side: Poland, Lithuania (no PU), GB (was my ally for many years), Aragon (broke free from PU and crushed Castile) and half the HRE minors.
The Protestant side: Brandenburg (leader), the other half of HRE minors, and my Sweden (with PU over Bohemia).
As soon as I joined I became the League leader as I was easily the strongest nation in it.
To make matters worse, my rival Ottomans then joined the Catholics.
Only neutral Great Power: France. I finally got them as ally (same three rivals: Ottomans, Austria, England) and got the opinion high enough that they finally joined the protestants.
While I waited, my Russia truce ran out and he also joined the Catholics.
I declared and after many many years, battles and dead soldiers those Catholics surrendered to Swedish Steel.
Soldier count at start of war: c.700,000, total casualties c.1,500,000.
Fun aftermath of the war:
- I made GB release Mann. guaranteed and subsidized him for fun. After he started colonizing I force-vassalized him.
- Austria got crippled so much that Ottomans later conquered all of Hungary and Eastern Austria (exect Vienna)
- Aragon recovered and was later one province (Tlemcen Granada) away from forming Spain and conquered much of Italy, Tunesia and Greece
- Six Electors converted to Protestant (including my PU), so I wasn't elected Emperor after the war (not member + controls Elector)
- I finally got enough Trade power in Lübeck (took Hamburg and Lübeck in the war) to move my Trade Capital there and had no loans since
- Shortly after the war I got a Brandenburg PU, which after integration (and with provinces taken in the war) granted me Sweden is not OP, my other goal for this campaign.
However, I had fun and played on, around 1650 I became Emperor and decided to "casually" continue.
Now it is 1770 and I think Revolutionary Sweden can WC (but probably not one tag, I don't want to annex my non-HRE marches Smolensk and Nepal. Also I have no interest in passing the final HRE reform (already have the achievement), I started the game as Sweden and want to end it as Sweden.

Bohemia was leader of the Catholic League.
Prior to the League event triggering I was allied to Bohemia.
When the League triggered, Bohemia rivaled me. I chose to break the marriage.
I did not wait for the truce to end. Protestants were twice as many as the catholics so I decided to start the war while I had the advantage.
After 100% Bohemia and ending the war, the achievement did not trigger.
Any of you guys know why I was not able to get the achievement?
I feel all the requirements were satisfied so I am a bit upset at loosing all this time for nothing :))
This could be obvious, but are you playing as Sweden?
Are your achievements enabled in top right corner of game? If yes, is Lion of the North still listed there?
I was playing as Sweden.
I always play in IronMan Mode.
I did not get the achievement.
If that overview is disabled or no achievements are listed you did not fulfil the "starting conditions" (start 11.11.1444, Historical Lucky Nations etc)
Also, *losing
