Austria expansion strategy?
Soon going to be trying Austria. After PUing Bohemia and Hungary, I am planning to eat Venezia whole and then go after Ottomans. Is this the normal strategy for Austria and are there other high value targets I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

There is always the remove-all-protestants-and-pass-all-reforms-to-create-unstoppable-hre-machine way.

Abuse the hell out of unlawful territory. Making HRE members release minors they gobbled up gives you authority. In my Austria game I was at like 21 Holy Roman Interventions by the time I revoked in 1607.

Remove all potestants, and pass all reforms except the last one.

Conquer all you can without getting too mad within the HRE but keep as many princes around. The more smaller princes you have the better. An alliance with Spain and the Pope could do well. Eat all you can eastward of the HRE and let Imperial Authority go up as much as you can naturally and whenever possible force conversions of princes and do try to make sure that none of the electors are converted to Protestantism after a few decades or else the Religious Leagues become available. Wait until you have 100+ non-HRE provinces and all of the reforms passed up until the one that disallows HRE wars. Once that reform is passed add 50 provinces to the HRE pass a reform to make sure you always become the emperor and then add another 50 and pass the next reform to vassalize all of the princes and enjoy the HRE swarm that you will now have to conquer the entire world or at least go for One Faith (I did that with an Ottoman formed Spain earlier in the year though that can’t be done anymore since Ottomans are an end game tag and can’t form anything other than the HRE but this can still very much be done with Austria.

Do make sure to get the PUs on Hungary and then on Bohemia. The Hungarian PU is especially useful for the fact that once they’re integrated randomly when a ruler dies or you do it manually you get a bunch of land you can add to the HRE (which you should hold off like I said before until you have the reform to disallow HRE infighting and have the necessary amount of provinces to add to get Imperial Authority to pass the next two reforms).

And do not ever pass the final reform until the very end of the game. It’s worth having that vassal swarm to fight, siege and most importantly core lots of land; just make sure to not make any new vassals after because while the HRE princes will be loyal new vassals won’t be because HRE is calculated differently.

Thanks for the guide! Should I pick diplo, influence or both?

Both makes it easy to control and expand, but not 'necessary'. The real question is, what other diplomacy groups would you want? Trade is unnecessary when you got your vassal swarm all transferring trade and rest are weak.

Release princes when you can for prestige cost by returning land while the cores are availible or constantly maintained / by rebels, subjugating your past rivals if they weren't at first in the empire.

Eating around & releasing venice & aqualia for instance in the venice node, same applies for the pope and italy (rushing to subvert/correct the shadow empire) in that as long as the land is cored (can be territorial) and added to the HRE, its a instant reinsertion for HRE membership since the new country's capital will be located over wherever you just added it.

If you stay EMperor and RM Burgundy you have a 80%/85% chance to get the Burgundian Inheritance IF it fires.

Try to prevent the Shadow Kingdom:
- Attack Venice, return core to Milan, release Aquileia, take mainland provinces for yourself (leave Venice itself for later)
(- Not necessary but may help: Become Curia Controller or get a good relation with Curia Controller)
- Attack Pope, take all provinces except Rome, core them
- Attack Pope, take Rome (don't core), pass Decision Rein in Northern Italy, release Pope by Event

Remember you get Restoration of Union CBs on Bohemia and Hungary from your Missions so you can get the PUs when you are ready, not only when the events fire.

As others have stated, you could go for uniting the HRE. Prevent the shadowkingdom, fight protestantism, and keep your princes from gobling each other up - taking any "excess" land that isn't necessary for their continued existence. Maybe even reclaim the lands held by Burgundy. Managing the HRE is a full time job. That's actually austrias mainthing, to be honest.

On the matter of ideas, I'd recommend diplo>religious if you're going to play the HRE. Diplo is more effective in handling AE IMO, and they also help with keeping your electors happy and lower diplo tech costs, allowing you to pump more into development. Religious is useful for shutting down the protestants, as the last idea gives you a casus belli against non-catholics. That way you can forcibly convert anyone without needing to make claims.

If you don't care about the HRE, you could always try to chew through Burgundy and France, or take on Poland.

My first Diplo Idea Group (often also my first group at all) is usually Influence (or Exploration).
However for Diplomacy-heavy games (for which Austria is THE example) I normally take Diplomatic, especially the Diplomat, the +Relations and the +Dip Rep helps much in the HRE.

Check out BudgetMonks HRE guide on youtube. About 5 or 6 round 8min clips. Basically runs through everything u should do till about 1520 or so and unite the hre. He did a great job, i highly recommend watching it.
