Which Japanese clan is the best to unite Japan?

Best = easiest? Hosokawa and Uesugi.
Best = strongest? ODA > Shimazu (Uesugi not bad either). That means you need to keep the idea set you start with and don't change to Japanese when prompted.

For conquest, the national idea's of Oda are military strong, but they start out small :) Hosokawa as maentioned is the easiest way

If this is your first time playing in Japan, I'd definitely recommend playing as Uesugi. That trade center that they own can help you easily manage your finances all while fielding a large army.

If you are good then pick Shimazu and eat the entire Kyushu Island, then you can use that to trap enemy armies on your island with navy and kill them. Shimazu has good military ideas and a decent starting position

Date is solid and well rounded but militarily oda and shimazu are both stronger
