Guaranteed independence
As Holland just as I'm about to attack leige france guaranteed them. How long does a guarantee last, is there any way to get it dropped? I'm playing in 1.17.

For me they seem to last almost forever. You may be able to get around it by getting an alliance with france and calling him into a proxy war to stop him getting in the way or go to war with france and get him to annul treaties or wait untill he is in a big war and just would not join.

Guaranteed independence usually means "I'll eat this later so don touch them" which mean, they will break it when they are ready. And they get 5 year one-way truth with them so you just wait and attack first

Pretty much this is what i have encountered

Guarantees created by the AI last only a certain amount of time, only guarantees from the start of the game (Ragusa, Scotland) last longer or almost forever

Guaranteeing has no timer. It can last forever if nothing changes.

You can get over it by:
* declaring war on the ally of Liege so they get called into war. Do not make them co-belligerent and the guarantee will not fire
* wait until France is busy with losing other war. Just like defensive calls from alliance, they could eventually refuse to help Liege (will also remove guarantee)
* since Guarantee uses up Diplomatic Relations slot it is possible France will drop it once they gather more allies/vassals
* wait for Liege to become bigger and/or France getting smaller. Only much bigger countries can guarantee much smaller countries

The AI will drop a guarantee if it cannot reach the country, so by taking over the border provinces of france you will get an instant revoke of guarantee.

Guarantees that are...guaranteed to last forever if both sides have never been at war with each other or have gotten alliances with each other are: Ottomans on Ragusa, France on Scotland (this always changes once they get an alliance but if they never get allied then the relation stays permanently), and Mamluks on Cyprus; the latter of which can certainly change without any war because Mamluks get an event that makes them a vassal but other than that it never changes can confirm.

Everything else is them telling their neighbors hey you can’t attack them without my interference or hey don’t touch this it’s mine, I don’t want it now but in a hundred years it mine. The AI even takes the power of their own allies into account as well. I playing as Saxony and had Russia as an ally and Russia was guaranteeing Sweden even though it was just me and Russia that bordered them. The AI respects their allies’ power but does not want them to gain too much influence over specific regions they themselves want to influence. But those obstacles can be easily taken care of if the desired country allies someone else you can fight to call them into the war, in that case even a no cb war can become highly valuable despite the instability and AE penalties you will suffer.
