If you don't want to keep troops there to defend then, if you get that dlc that I forgot the name of that also lets you decide what you vassals (unions, normal vassals, colonies) act like, if you don't want your colonies attacking, then set it to the peaceful one so that they don't declare war.
uh , use diplomacy an offer to join their war? or 'demand peace' ? which would drag into the war should it be refused. or simply declare war on their enemy seperately.

Read the OP again. He clearly states that they are the ones declaring a war (a colonial war that only they can declare and the mother nation does not get to be involved in)
It makes no sense that your colony should be able to get DoW'd on without their overlord being dragged in.
This. I feel your pain OP, this issue must be a silly oversight. I've had to no CB a couple of times to save my colonies because they declare war against huge native alliances and I'm left out of it.
