The usual workaround uses that the Emperor cannot demand provinces back from nations that are at war. (In addition, an AI Emperor also (normally) does not demand provinces back when he is at war)
So just start a new easy "distraction war" before peacing out of your "real war". Give provinces to your vassals in the "real war" peace treaty and let them core them. Peace out in the "distraction war" for whatever you want.
I usually only give vassals land from allies of the main target since you can make peace with them while the main war still continues. Sometimes I even start wars with countries that have the main target as an ally so I can core the provinces before making peace and I don't get the penalties for unlawful territory.
There are multiple ways around it:
-don't give HRE land to vassal
-don't have vassal
Vassals are completely barred from diplomatic relations with others unless they have high liberty desire, and even then, it's only allowed to make alliances with other vassals. They make no diplomatic decisions themselves towards other countries, so I assume this is an oversight by the devs, as it contradicts the other limitations the vassals have.
if that was the case why would vassals improve and seek help for independence wars.
as a vassal elector give their 2 cents
sent ocassionally insults or gifts
improve with the pope and if papal controller call crusades?
they also grant fleet baseing rights and acess if they like you (as a foreign vassal)
I don't have the DLC that let's vassals have support for independence, never heard of vassals sending gifts or insults either
can fabricate claims
annoy you cause they want to be a march or royal marry you
can knowledge share with overlord
and probabbly some more stuff i ust dont think of right now
last 2 are only things they can do with their overlord, they can't ask other countries for royal marriages though
Why not? Should be pretty easy.
Just add a modifier to the AIs consideration whether they want to give a province back or not when Emperor asks that gives -1000 when being a vassal.
Tada...
Another thing which I despise about the vassals aswell, they can ask for military access, which also gives conditional military access to my enemies (i also dislike conditional military access)
I just wish the vassal AI couldn't do stuff behind my back without my influence at all
