Crimea as a March for Ottomans
Should I guarantee Crimea in the beginning of the game so they don't get eaten up by the great horde before the event happens for crimea to become my march? Or will it just draw me into early wars with lithuania or the great horde? How can I help them with getting screwed early?

I think you can ally Crimea from the start.

The event itself is not quaranteed to pop, the ruler of Crimea has to die before 1466 while not in war and the base chance of becoming Otto march is only 35% (increased by size of Ottos).

So should I ally them and then try to expand to take Byzantium/Albania or Serbia to just increase the chances? Or should I get something in the Crimea region? I read it can increase trigger chance even more. I'm still learning this game but my first try I got Crimea as a march so I'd like to do that without war on them.

I would just ally Crimea and then play normally expanding where you can. It does not matter which region you expand to.

If 1466 has passed or the ruler of Crimea has already changed, you can not get them for free anymore so you need to conquer and vassalize them like any other country.

Does it matter at all if I'm at war?

It does not matter if Ottomans are in war. What matters is if Crimea is at war, the event will not procede if Crimea is at war (any war) while their original ruler dies.

i would not ally them as they (at least in my games) tend to do fine and then if the event fires and they refuse you get a war goal on them and you don't have to take the stab hit to attack them. also having a powerful ally (you) will prob make them more likely to attack a nation

if they do start to lose a war tho you prob want to ally them

The cb holds for 15 years, more than enough time to break the truce and prepare.

Allying them keeps them save. They usually get easily slaughtered early on.

Today, in my current game as Ottos I actually had the event in 1502. I got them as a march for free (plus the CB and they are reduced to three provinces). I hadn't looked too closely at them before, so I do not know if their original ruler is still alive - I had taken a few Crimean provinces in an earlier war, though.

It appears that they removed the date restriction on the event, probably to make it more likely to fire.

I read some where that your chances of getting Crimea as a march increases the less providence they have or the more providence you have as ottomans. Not sure if its true though.

The max chance is if Ottos have 40 or more provinces and Crimea has < 12. There's also a bonus to the chance if crimea_region = { owned_by = TUR } (and no chance if anatolia_region isn't owned) but I'm not sure whether that means 100% owned or just owning one province in the region or what.

I've seen that said before but I don't know what that means. I'm still relatively new.
