Whats the real point of defender of the faith?
Other than an utter annoyance where your stupid allies decide "I better take defender of faith so they can't expand and annoy them." It would be better if it was for the religious CB or heathens attacking said religion (which by far makes more sense). Or they could make it so the defender of the faith is disabled during age of revolutions.

What are your thoughts on this?

It's a trade-off for religious nations. You can declare yourself the protector of your religion, improving your own prestige in the eyes of the world and inspiring your soldiers to fight harder, but you have to be willing to put your money where your mouth is when a war actually starts. Strategy-wise I find it inconvenient unless I'm playing with a small religion (like Orthodoxy; play as Russia, and you'll probably be the only Orthodox nation left within a hundred years. It can be a hassle when it calls enemies in to your fights, but like any other alliance you just have to be careful how you declare your wars.

I don't really think it's powerful enough to make it worth restricting anymore than it is.

I think it's already been nerfed too much by the same-continent rule. Like, if I take it as Ottomans, it won't stop Spain from eating up Morocco and Tunis because that's "Africa", even though it's on my doorstep.

The extra missionary is nice if you're converting add more moral is always good.

as a catholic it also gives more papal points. In my current hungarian play I took it and with a couple other modifiers like ally pope and cardinals i managed to get 14 papal point income yearly which is great. combining it with conversion i was able to run a bunch of those buyable bonuses like tax running indefinately which was great. the catholic bonuses are actually not bad its just weird that the fewer catholic nations left the better it gets.
Can be decent if your religion is pretty smol, otherwise it's not something I tend to bother with.

Edit: don't think it's a feature really worth changing, I've never really seen it do anything particularly important.
