Is colonizing Australia worth it

No, colonize brunei and the high dev moluccas first. Once you have a tight hold on those trade nodes, australia becomes more interesting.

If someone else colonizes australia first, then colonize 5 provinces yourself to get a colonial nation there, and then subsidize the hell out of it and tell it to "start war in colony". You'll annex australia in no time, while some european paid for the colonists
What are you trying to achieve? If you are running out of lands to conquer, colonize what you can, but Australia is not some magical land you must have not matter what. Indonesia, Malaya, the Spice islands, is where rich provinces are. If I play in India, I just ignore colonization and keep conquering lands toward China and Persia.

In general, you have 2 goals when colonizing:
- to form colonial Nations who will support you in wars and give you money
- to steer Trade into your home Trade Node
Actually, Australia/New Zealand has a decent amount of development and decent trade good availability (gold anyone?). It's better than some other colonial regions in that regard. While I agree that getting a stranglehold on Malacca and the Moluccas is a higher priority it's not like Australia is a waste of time (unlike Alaska, Rio, and much of Brazil).
You get an achievement for colonizing Australia. Allegedly. I colonized it enough to get a Colonial Nation, and still didn't get the achievement. And it was on an Ironman Capable save.
Already got the achievement , going for the sun never sets
