Russian army question

Year is 1665, im in a PU war against castille and france. 7th in military technology, full russian ideas, 105% discipline and +10% combat ability for infantry and cavalry. Yet, my armies are horrible at fighting bohemia and anything to the west of them (scandanavia included). Don't have this problem with countries in other continents. They can barely fight when outnumbering the enemy 2vs1 (with a general included). They lose horribly even with superior military technology than the one their enemies have.

Russian troops are terrible.

I suggest the streltsy option in the menu to get tons of free troops that are better than regular troops and are cheaper to upkeep.

Unit peep difference in 1661 between western and eastern is just 1 so that's not the culprit.
Maybe it's the number of cannon and general fire peep? How many cannon have you brought in that battle?

I had the same problem as OP with Russia. I got alright composition of cannons and infantry (as well as cavalry) but yeah it looks like there is a code or something that makes the russian army perform much much worse than western countries. Even though you just said there's only one pip difference ( if that's correct that is )

I am using Inf+art only as russia to make lots of money.
Together with defensive ideas and attrition policies it is a very fun way to play the game. I can easily smash everything up to poland+lithuania with my vassals alone. If ottoderps or a huge coalition is attacking me I just hiding in the woods until they ran out of manpower. But only russia can afford such an cheesy strategy.

Looking at your screenshot there's a small important detail that you may have missed, Next to the Russian troops is a small red minus symbol. This means you are fighting on unfavourable terrain or have taken a river crossing.

Terrain is really important in combat. If you fight on favourable rather than unfavourable terrain then your results will be a lot better.

I'd also ask - exactly which military idea groups have you taken? What about your opponents? And which army composition are you using (also current tech level, since this affects composition a lot).

Finally, French troops are amongst the best in Europe - especially early game. All other things being equal you'd expect them to be a tough challenge.

We only see both generals' levels (your 1 star vs France's 2 star).
Stars don't mean anything but can be a first indicator that he has a (far) superior general.

What are both generals' stats?

Also one important tip for future screenshots:
During the ongoing battle click on it! That opens the battle window which contains many useful information which we can analyze here (Army composition, Morale, Discipline, Terrain, rough estimate for tech (via Tactics), ...).

Pretty much this. Even though they got a slight buff when Third Rome came out Russian military ideas are still garbage compared to the other major powers. Streltsy are a double edged sword as they quickly add significantly to stability cost. Your best bet is to not be in position where you need to fight another great power (well maybe Portugal is ok) at anything close to even odds.

Lol your response is garbage. " Don't fight GP" how are you going get past Commonwealth? Or Ottomans? They are going bully you to death if you won't take them out eventually. Just expanding into Asia(east) is boring af.

Bohemia, Branderburg and such smaller countries. And no, they didn't reach their OP ideas as it is very early game.
