Help with stopping independence

Hi,

I’m new to EU4 but I’m loving it. I am currently Castile and managed to conquer Portugal and annexed it fully after a couple of wars. The problem is, a few years later, they declared independence again. I tried to manage the rebel’s to stop them but it did no good. What do I have to do to stop countries I’ve conquered from declaring independence? As I don’t really want to have to conquer them again? Any help would be brilliant! Thank you!

just beat the rebels as rebels are the only way for nations to declare indepdance, with portugal tho you have to remember there are portugese islands the rebels might be hiding on

Core the territories and convert the culture, that's the best bet; It's somewhat easier to just keep high stability and be mindful of war exhaustion, but if you core and convert it should smash em

Just on the point of converting them. It says I can’t convert if there are separatists? Am I doing something wrong? All I’m doing is constantly handling them. I’ve made them core but can’t seem to touch the culture.

That sounds like there's a rogue army that needs to be destroyed before you can start converting. Humanist ideas are definitely a good idea.

First and foremost, completely annexing Portugal is never a good idea as Castille.

Either you force them into a PU per mission or you vassalize them after annexing some provinces in the first war.

Fully conquering and annexing Portugal is just a waste of Admin points.

In terms of rebellions, the portugese rebels usually want to siege all the portugese land back, so what you do is standing with your whole army on a portugese province and let the rebels come to you, so you get the defender bonus. This should usually be enough to negate their uprising again. Dont use valuable monarch points to convert their culture, its pointless.

Hover over the Unrest value in the province window.
The popup lists sources of Unrest, including Separatism.

(A bit simplified) Separatism is automatically added in provinces you conquer and decays over time (the popup states when it is gone, takes several years). Whenever Separatist Rebels siege occupy a province (and you have no (unoccupied) fort in any adjacent province Separatism is increased and thus takes longer to vanish.
If the Separatism in a province is gone you can culture-convert it.

The number of years of Separatism a newly conquered province gets can be reduced by few sources, mainly Humanist Ideas and Humanist+Offensive poicy.
