Playing with little to no knowledge of history.
Will I have fun with this game even though I have hardly any knowledge of history?

History isn't really a big part of this game unless you make it so. The starting date (1444) tries to place you in a historically accurate environment, but from then on when you take over, history is what you make it.

I think what will matter more in whether or not you like the game is if the type of RTS and setting appeals to you, more so than if you know the history of why certain things happen in the game.

You can actually learn a fair bit about history from this game. There are tons of historical events (or they are based on history).
I went into the game with almost no knowledge of the history at the time. History might help you learn quicker or know what might happen in the future (although you'll learn that quickly anyway). You will definitely learn history and be able to name most of the countries, learn their histories, and the event text will teach you about the time. You will have fun, and you will have more fun when you learn about the history behind all it.
