I have also had a rival intervene and help me win a war.
I'm France fighting Spain and the Commonwealth intervenes. I divert resoruces to peace out the Commonwealth and the Ottomans immediately intervene as soon as the Commonwealth is out.
I've also had allies, who are Great Powers, who wouldn't join a call to arms. However, they intervened on my behalf and have made some wars super-easy.
Best bet to me, is to make allies with the top half of Great Powers.
Atleast in that game it felt fair at times and you knew what risks you were in. Now I have to worry about half of the Great powers jumping in to a war.
Well that plan is okay if you don't need their land and they want to be friends with you. I am in a crappy situation in my last few games where Burgundy has been split but will usually be consumed by France in the long run. It is ruining my games because Austria is always lacking power that it needs in the long run and no one counters France. I feel like France always finds a way to screw my games over, either they ♥♥♥♥ block any war or make alliances with Poland or Ottomans. Or they just chew up Burgundy and wallonia, and punch most of their rivals in the faces. The Ai against France is its main problem. It can have numerical advantage in the early game but due to French military being OP it will rarely have enough to out number it, not to mention their starting generals. Atleast with the Commonwealth I feel like I have a chance to take them on with the AI. But with France, Austria will feed its army a quick death to France, and Burgundy will usually not have all of its subjects to help out in time to stop France from flattening them.
or if you aren´t the weakest of the great powers attack a weaker one or one weakened by a long war...
