Since they are your allies you have other options as well. A very effective way to have them not join the war is to have them on another war on your side. If they are on your side in ANY war, they cannot join ANY war against you, even if you attack their allies.
Ever wanted to clean up a region but they're all allied to one big guy? Ally him, have him join a war with you, and keep that war going by not getting the wargoal. Once you're done don't give the guy any land and conquer his clay once the truce is done.
