I started yesterday on this achievement and I joined the HRE asap because I took Maine, too, and France was rather upset about this :) With the Emperor backing you up, this playthrough gets a lot easier. Im around 1600 and annexed the British Isles (wrong direction I know...) and grabbing some land inside the HRE towards the Ottoblob. Wonder how this will work you...
Yeah france had -120 from wanting my provinces, but they got a massive noble rebellion and had time to cool off. Now they're at -31 and loyal to me again. I'm also allies with castile and austria, so I had about the best start I could hope for.
I guess I'll join the HRE too if its working for you, I suppose it can't hurt me too much.
In a hurry? Seems risky to do a no CB war, I'd be scared of my allies dropping me and letting the wolves eat me.
My plan so far is wait for the emperor to be unable/unwilling to join and attack genoa. If I win a war with genoa I can take scio and work my way from there.
