Leaving the HRE?

So, I'm playing as Florence and I'm trying to go for the achievement to form Italy. I just got the event where Italian nations leave the HRE and I don't know which option I should pick. Does anyone know when I should leave the Empire? I'll have to do it eventually if I want to form Italy, but I'd really like to keep be able to keep the protections of the HRE as well as my alliance with Austria.

If you stay in HRE after shadow kingdom you will get pretty big negative modifiers. But you can leave HRE whenever you want even if you pick to stay in HRE 1st.

Is there any advantage to leaving? you leave the hre upon formation, and being a member doesn't prevent you from forming it. while you're member, it also allows you to attack other members and receive bonuses depending on how many reforms are passed

you leave the hre when you form italy so it's better to leave now.
leaving hurts your relations with austria but the alliance should hold.
staying in the hre hurts your relations with the other italian states and gives - 2 or 3 unrest.

Okay, thanks for the answers. I just wasn't sure whether the best time to leave would be sometime now or later.

It would just depend on what kind of situation you are in. If you are feeling threatened by one of your neighboring Italian states then it might be a good idea to remain in the HRE until you are in a position where you are strong enough to fight them. The penalty for remaining is pretty severe but it is still better than losing territory in a war.

I know that you take a relations penalty with Austria if you choose to leave but I don't know if this would necessarily break the alliance. If your relations are high enough, you may be able to keep them as an ally. To be safe, it might be a good idea to gain an alliance with somebody like France or Castille before leaving if you want protection.
