It is viable to go monarchy. It´s just... lame to do so. 95% (or more, you get the idea) of nations don´t have the mechanics and events that republics do, then why the ♥♥♥♥ you would want to go monarchy? Specially since it´s only viable if you do very early to have REAL chance of getting personal unions. By 1650... it´s stupid.
Austria will be easy to ♥♥♥♥, Saxony is emperor xd I have poland and france as allies.
I'm playing a bit more wide this game. I vassalized byzantium and I plan to feed them their cores and i've taken romagna, urbino and avignon from the pope. Also Naples got independant.
