The alternative are the share maps and steal maps diplomatic interactions.
Two problems with that mechanic, first of all 50 spy network is a LOT and then there is the requirement that you have to have units in the region or bordering it (not sure which).
I think that system is barely working as it is right now...
As for the cost in spy network or prestige, that really depends on your situation. If you are depending on claims for CBs then stealing maps isn't really an option yeah but if you are say a horde, or using the religious cbs then you probably have the spare diplomats.
A fairly easy way if you are doing a WC or any other gameplan that gives you a lot of prestige is if you are at war with someone at the edge of the known world just make them release an OPM, that OPM will love you enough to share all their maps with you.
The weird thing is that i can see parts of south america but not a way over the atlantic.
Well i have another like 20-30 years of downtime before my edgame push will start so i guess i'll have to to do the release thing with some saved up prestige and a few sacrificial boats.
