Can I create vassal with only certain provinces?
Hello!

So I want to relinquish control of a state to a vassal. To create a vassal, I can do that via my own diplomacy screen and press the "Create a subject" button. However, all the choices listed there only give predetermined provinces that the new vassal would get.

Can I somehow custom which provinces the vassal would get? Or can I change which provinces a vassal has after the vassal has spawned?

no, releasing a nation will give them their core provinces and you can't control this.

I believe you can take provinces off your vassals though. This makes them unhappy though and you then need to core the provinces.

Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Would that mean that I could theoretically take the provinces I want and then sell the provinces that I want the vassal to have? Playing on ironman mode so don't really want to experiment too much.

So I started a new game and looked around a bit. It seems the only way to do this is to first spawn a vassal that has at least 1 territory that you want him to have. Then, you break vassilization and wait 10 years for the truce to disappear. THEN you full conquest him, annex all the territory you want back and re-make him your vassal. AND THEN you finally give him the territories you wanted him to have in the first place.

Surely there must be an easier way to do this?

You can go to the vassal screen and "seize land" from your vassals. This makes them unhappy though.
You cannot sell land to your vassals. You can transfer land to them though.

I can't find the seize land option. I know of the subjects tab, but I don't see any "seize land" option there.

you sure?
can you grant provinces?
click on the left top map. Then on that screen go to the subjects. Then find your subject and click on the one you want to seize land from.

Make sure its a vassal as marches and PU give different options

THe only way to create vassals with a certain part of land is by using Client states unlocked at diplomatic tech 22, alongside the advanced CB's. To create a client state simple select a province and then hit the 'Create Client State' Button which is a crown and a blue circle about 2/3 down the page, next to the HRE buttons.

Unforunately before this tech borders are a little more difficult to manipulate.

common sense DLC.

leave it to paradox to lock crucial game features behind a paywall.

Its Cossacks not Common Sense.

Thats because the vassal system was barebones at release it wasn't til later that they overhauled it.

Also you maybe able to munipulate the cores by culture converting or waiting a certain amount of time until they go away. This would affect what provinces they obtain when you release them.
