there are a lot of modifiers to how fast things like AE decreases. You suffer lower AE if you have high prestige. You also suffer less AE when taking a province if you have a claim, and also which CB you use (when you select the CB it will tell you how it modifies cost and AE)

Oh i see cause i took a province from scotland even though i had no claim on it but they were allied to tyrone
right now though my truce with scotland is 2 years away from ending and i have claim on 4 provinces and lets say i declared war for one of them and i take the rest anyway will i suffer any extra aggressive expansion?

taking land in anyway will give AE how much and who with depends on many thing

Development - the bigger the province the more AE
Culture - Nations of the Targets Culture Group will get more AE
Religion - Nations of the Targets religion will get more AE
HRE - More AE for provinces in the HRE with Nations in the HRE
Neighbours - Nations next to you or the Target get More AE the further away from you the less they get
CB - some cassus Belli give less AE than others Conquest 100% Reclaim core 25% Nationalism 50% Imperialism 75% etc
Taking Land from a None Co- beligerant - double AE ?

im sure there is more but thats good enough to start.

you can keep AE down by
Using teh right CB
Ideas
Spreading your wars to diffrent regions get a bit with catholics then a bit with Sunnis then a bit in the new world etc
Having a claim on the land
Vassalizing rather than axxexing
Improved relations

AE will drop with everyone on 1st jan each year by about 2-4 improved with
Ideas
Improved relations Adviser

At 50 AE nations who dislike you will be willing to join a coalition - No coalition will form unless 4 Nations are willing to join
JUst because a coalition formed doesnt mean they will feel strong enough to beat you.
Truced Nations cant join
Allies cant join but can defend you
If you Attack a coalition memeber all the other memebers will join
Any coalition member can start a war with you.
You cant peace out Coalition members if they declare on you any deal is made with war leader

AE is obtained when you take what isn't yours, other nations' land. Any time you do this you give an opinion modifier to surrounding nations depending on several factors:
  1. The Development of a Province. It's a lot more distressing to take Paris than it is to take Darfur. Don't be afraid to avoid high development if you're just trying to cut a nation in half or get a border with someone.
  2. Who is what. Religion and Culture drastically change what AE you get. Annexing Morocco (Muslim and Berber) won't bother Spain (Catholic Iberian) as much as it would bother Tunis (A Muslim Berber). But it wouldn't bother Tunis as much if you were Muslim as well.
  3. Distance. Does Ming care that you annexed all of France? Does Russia? They won't, because they're far away.
Spain will care because they're much closer.
  4. The HRE. The HRE is supposed to be safe, do not oppress them or they'll join up in a coalition and shame you. And by shame I mean beat you so hard you'll cough up France. Taking provinces from the HRE amasses HUGE AE.
  5. Modifiers from Ideas. Apparently, some people are really good at justifying annexing the entire HRE as "Urban Rebalancing", such as the Pope or Ryukyu.

As for losing AE. AE ONLY degrades over time and is modified by the Improve Relations modifier (It's now the same as Better Relations Over Time, so it IS good for something!). To improve this, get an advisor, certain Idea groups, etc.

The most important way to avoid AE is to attack different groups at different times. It's difficult to master, so be careful. Every time you take land, it'll tell you if that'll make a Coalition.

+50% taking land from an ally of the enemy that was not selected as a co-belligerent.
Pippin123 Apr 16, 2017 @ 3:47pm
Also, your own allies will only received reduced AE (50% I believe ?)

So even if you don't really need them, it can be good to ally a large neighbouring coutry so they don't join a coalition too soon...
