Also when I mentioned bonuses, if you have any ideas or policies to increase income with tariffs that's another way to increase income without raising tariffs and having a negative diplomatic impact towards your colony with your nation.
You can actually go quite high if you want.
I prefer to keep them mid level as with more money in their pocket, they can develop more their land and pay for bigger armies and navies which i find more useful than a few more ducats a month in mine.
Trade can generate a lot more money than tariffs can, so I would concentrate on that and keep the colonies happy.
