It depends on your bonuses, but overall if you have high diplomatic reputation and high relations with the colony your trying to raise traiffs then you'll be in a good place. In previous patches like the Denmark and the one before it 70% was acceptable but nothing over that. Just make sure you have more land than them if you can.

Also when I mentioned bonuses, if you have any ideas or policies to increase income with tariffs that's another way to increase income without raising tariffs and having a negative diplomatic impact towards your colony with your nation.

Optimal depends on your strengh compared to the CN, diplo reput, relation, mercantilism, tech etc...

You can actually go quite high if you want.

I prefer to keep them mid level as with more money in their pocket, they can develop more their land and pay for bigger armies and navies which i find more useful than a few more ducats a month in mine.

I tend to keep tariffs relatively low around 20% to 30%. I prefer a stronger colony that can conquer enemy colonies and maybe hold a major power in check until I get enough troops to a ballte in the Americas. Also, I don't waste monarch points on raising tariffs as I will just use the triggers to raise or lower tariffs. You can raise tariffs higher than the 30% but just watch the liberty desire and check your colonies income as your raise tariffs.

Trade can generate a lot more money than tariffs can, so I would concentrate on that and keep the colonies happy.

Just spend your adm mil dip points on increasing your subjects development, doing that lowers liberty desire GREATLY where you can easilly have colonies at 100% tarrifs and are still loyal, it's pretty OP.
