You can't prevent this from happening unless you mod the game. If you really don't want those provinces just release your colony as a vassal.

But honestly, these colonies can give you amazing returns. They give you higher land/naval force limits and they can give you a free merchant. They're extremely useful when fighting wars in the America's and even send their fleets to Europa/Africa to help with blockading/naval combat.

Also if you want those American provinces to be worth anything you'll have to make them in a state but the upkeep for those states will be off the charts and you'll be losing a ton of money.

TLDR : Just keep the colonial nation and if you have any access to colonists you should help it grow. They're definately worth it.

No. As soon as you get 5 oversea cored provinces in the Americas, they will form a colonial nation. There is nothing you can do game-wise to prevent this from happening.

If you still don't want a colonial nation you would have to find a mod that removes them. I'm sure there must one on the workshop. Just do a google search.

1.) Have provinces in the new world, make sure a colonial nation DOES NOT SPAWN.

2.) Lose all your provinces in the old world (don't worry you can get them back later)

3.) Your capital will go to the new world since you only have provinces there.

4.) No colonial nations in new world will spawn since your capital is there.

5.) Get strong and then take your cores back via reconquest wars.

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR CAPITAL FROM THE NEW WORLD OR COLONIAL NATIONS WILL SPAWN!

That's an option but requires you to move your capital to the new world. Quite drastic if you have an extensive European empire.
