Let rebels enforce the religion on your kingdom, its usually better this way too because the rebels convert each province they take.

Don´t think it´s the best way for big countries. Convert and get a center of reformation. That negative prestige decays VERY fast. Unless you are going to fight a hard war where the morale makes difference, it´s no big deal at all.

Rebels converting your provinces will not change your official religion. If they enforce demands, you take the prestige hit anyways.

Rebel conversion can be quite OP if you have some way to spawn multiple stacks, otherwise it takes too long for large countries.

Well, the only case I ever did using rebels to convert was to convert Orthomans, and they take massive pretige hit when converted. Maybe the prestige hit doesn't exist if from the same religion group.

There is no painless way to convert so you should just stay as a Kool Katholic Khristian.

Depends which country he plays as... As Japan or Prussia, it's worth to switch to Protestantism. As Lithuania, for example, it would be very dumb move to switch to Protestantism.

There's an extremely fast way to get your prestige back at a positive. After you convert start a few quick wars with small nations and in place of taking gold or provinces from them, force them to cancel alliances and rivalries. This works the best for medium (100-300 dev) to large (300+ dev) nations. In 1 war you can get around 30 prestige.

You could also try circumnavigating if you're a colonizer. Shouldn't be too hard and gives 100 prestige, so you could gain all your prestige back ASAP
