Is there a way to form spain diplomatically?
I'm a new player trying to play as Castile and I'm wondering if its possible to form the nation of spain diplomatically. I'd also love to know how to prevent the castilian civil war after taking over grenada.

Yes, if you maintain good relations with Aragon, then an even called The Iberian Wedding CAN trigger. Note the CAN. If it does, you get Aragon, oh, and Naples :)

Castilian civil war is kind of luck based, you just need to hope that you get the right heir in the right moment. Also, the Castilian civil war isn't tied to taking over Granada. There is an event that involves the Granadan provinces and causes rebels to rise though.

Its also quite likely to get the Iberian Wedding event, it happens 97% of my Castile and/or Aragon games for me.

Improve their opinion, lower their Libery Desire. Using your subject interactions can help, but if they aren't too big I find just having a good reputation is enough. http://www.eu4wiki.com/Subject_nation#Liberty_desire

Also you can trigger the event if Aragorn has a regency or interegnum

Support Loyalists, conquer more land of your own so you can support a larger army, and improve relations with them.

Alternatively get the ideagrups Diplomatic and/or Influence. They help. Another option is to get the bonus "Trading in Ivory"which involves dominating trade around Africa.

My experience is that if you're playing as either Castile or Aragon you have a big chance of the Iberian Wedding firing at some point. Don't ever declare a war with Aragon it's not worth it and possibly stay away from attacking Castile if you're Aragon. Worry about other things because it happens almost every game. The AI for Castile always gets rid of their heir immediately so theoretically you could get the PU naturally really early on if you're playing as Aragon.

Don't necessarily freak out if they have a high LD, they won't actually declare war for independence if they think they'll lose, so keep strong alliances (France ? Austria ?). They just won't help you.

Each point of Dip Rep reduce LD by 5%, having +200 relations will reduce LD by -20%, and you can "use loyalist" to further reduce it (vs 10% of their budget). Once they calmed down and like you, simply increase your holdings with their help...

Also get a RM with Burgundy for the (small) chance to inherit all their HRE lands if the Burgundy inheritance fires (only before 1500)...

Also make sure to habe positive prestige. They will get uppity if it falls into the negative. At least it's not an automatic end to the PU if your ruler dies while having negative prestige like it used to be way back when.

How yeah, be very careful if you decide to switch religion for some reason (-100 Prestige). I did it once as Burgundy, ended up at -50 prestige and all PUs in "open revolt" (I think each point of negative prestige is 1 point of LD).

Does the PU still end if you have negative relations at monarch death ?
