Is there a mod to make combat less luck based?
Title. I just lost a battle with 20,000 men versus 4,000 because my general rolled a 0, 1 and 1, while the other guy got an 8, 10, and 7. I had quintriple the number of troops as the other guy, with the battlefield being completely even, and somehow 4,000 dirty mercs patched together in 15 days lead by a 1/1/0/0 leader managed to beat my 16,000 infantry, 4,000 calv army lead by a 1/0/3/2. Not the best general for combat, and I understand shock is important, but this is absurd.

I recently come from Crusader Kings 2, with experience in HoI, and this is infuriating. So is the ambassador micromanagement and a bunch of other stuff, but i'm sure i'll get used to that.

Yeah, there is! It is called wiki. The FAQ mod is also good. If you can invest more time, then the forum search mod is also very helpfull.
:p
Seriously, battle has so many factors - it is on the lesser part based on luck. You didn't provide a screenshot, so noone here will be able to tell you what went wrong.

I mentioned the battlefield was even. They had no ideas, advanced techs (I have been warned to avoid wars at Mil 3 with Mil 4 nations), or modifiers giving them a bonus to combat ability, morale, or anything else relevant over me. In fact, I had a slight advantage in both prestige and power projection to beat them with.

Combat was between standard early units, during the first year of play. I didn't keep track of what they used, but I had halberd inf. and Chevauchée. Morale was at full for both armies, though mine may have been slightly less than so. Combat width was 15.

Combat took place on flatlands, no crossing. I was the attacker. No other terrain modifiers (including local modifiers), and the enemy did try to run from my doomstack, but my superior manuver general caught them.

Did I miss something I should have considered? I read the wiki and watched some tutorials, and can't think of anything else. I'm playing at speed 1 to make sure I catch anything that happens.

I'm not new to Paradox games, having played HoI, CK2, and even Stellaris, but never have I been so shafted because I fumbled a few dice rolls.

Reloaded save and tried combat again. This time I rolled well and stackwiped them.

First of all you miss a screenshot of the battle, which would help the community the most to help you.
Then you didn't even mention the most important part: Which nation are you, which nation is the enemy.
Are you eastern or western, what is the enemy?
What are the national traditions of you and the enemy?
Was there a fort you fought on?
etc......

In the end there can be something like 'bad luck'. But as i said in my first post: It is the lesser part. Most of the time a battle can be analyzed and then explained. But you don't provide enough informations to analyze it.

Don't be too mad at that one battle. Play a big nation to begin with and play from the start to the end. You will see that over 400 years luck is the smallest factor to consider :)

You should consider re-reading what he wrote. He quite clearly stated they may have had a slight morale advantage, there were no terrain modifiers and it was the first year of play meaning no ideas and no tech advantages...

@OP
You had some terrible luck on the rolls, sadly it happens, luckily your forces will soon recover and you can kick that bloke were the sun doesn't shine.
The only part about combat that is luck based are the rolls and early game they can be very influential given their range from 0-9 and the lack of modifiers from tech and ideas, however once you start getting good generals and larger forces the tables will turn and it will be a lot more about your forces abilities (morale, discipline, force multipliers) than the rolls.

There is a mod that removes dice roles completely, but then it would take for you months or even more to finish a battle. Not sure if you want this mod, but if you do let me know. I will search for it in mean time.

Ignoring how 6/7 of the comments are "Dice rolls don't suck you suck"...

Just by searching "Combat" on the Workshop I found 3 mods that reduce the dicerolls. This one is the most up-to-date and makes it out of 6 instead of 10: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=826635217

Not sure if recent patches broke it, test it out yourself.

1. It's what OP wanted.
2. It simply makes rolls go from 0-5 instead of 0-9. It doesn't remove luck. It just makes it so that pips, terrain (Which you might as well consider Mov-Pips), and other bonuses are more powerful.
