What is Critter Café?

Critter Café is a cosy, wholesome game developed by Sumo Newcastle and published by Secret Mode. In Critter Café, you rescue and bond with adorable, fantasy critters in need of your help and build a new home together. Design and run your own café, care for your critters, uncover the secrets of mysterious portals, and create a wholesome café for all to enjoy!



What platforms is Critter Café available on?

Critter Café launches on Steam and Nintendo Switch on November 26, 2024.



Is a demo available for Critter Café?

Yes! You can play a free demo of Critter Café now on Steam, which introduces you to the game’s initial story, features and activities.



Can I play Critter Café with a controller and mouse/keyboard?

Yes – Critter Café has been designed to play comfortably with both a controller, and via mouse and keyboard. If you are using a controller, please aim to use an officially supported controller.



Is Critter Café playable on Steam Deck?

Yes! You can play Critter Café on the go with your Steam Deck. Both the full game and the demo are Steam Deck compatible, with full verification pending.



I played the Critter Café demo on Steam. Will my progress in the demo carry over to the full game?

No - as we mentioned when the Critter Café demo was released, progress in the demo will not continue into the full game. The demo features a small slice of the full Critter Café experience, so it shouldn't take you too long to progress back to where you were able to reach in the demo!



Do I need an online connection to play Critter Café?

No, there is no requirement to be connected to the internet to play Critter Café. Of course, an online connection will be required for installation, as well as downloading any post-launch updates.



Is there anything players should do before launching Critter Café?

Just make sure your PC and/or device are fully updated before playing Critter Café, to ensure the best possible experience, checking things like your drivers and OS are on the latest version.



Are there Steam Achievements for Critter Café?

Yes! There are 29 different Steam Achievements to unlock as you play Critter Café.

What’s the best way to give feedback about Critter Café and speak with its team?

The official Secret Mode Discord server includes a dedicated channel for Critter Café, where members of the team and fellow players have created a cosy community to get involved with! You can also join the community on our official subreddit, and share thoughts in the Steam Discussions area.



How do I unlock more content in Critter Café?

The majority of content in Critter Café will unlock as you progress through the game. Complete shifts in your café to unlock new customisation items for it; unlock more tools for beating puzzles as you unlock more portals; unlock more colour variants and options for your Critters as you bond and interact with them. Look out for on-screen notifications that let you know when new content is unlocked.

Additionally, keep an eye out for Blueprint cards, located throughout the world. When discovered, these Blueprints will unlock unique items, such as café furniture.



What is the currency in Critter Café and how do I buy things?

There is no specific currency that you need to earn or spend in Critter Café. EXP that goes towards increasing your café level, your bonds with specific Critters, and your general bond level with all Critters, will be earned as you progress. Once you unlock something, it is instantly usable – you don’t need to buy it.



How do the ‘open for business’ café shifts work?

Each day in Critter Café, you can earn EXP by running an ‘open for business’ shift. During this time, your café will be open to customers, who will request orders for you to complete. Approach the customers with symbols above their heads, then return to the counter to complete their order, via completing one of a number of minigames. The more orders you complete, and the faster you do so before the shift ends, the more EXP you will earn.

Outside of the shifts, the ‘bookings’ feature in your café will see customers request bespoke experiences in your café, asking to meet Critters with specific features, include certain furniture, or other themed requests. Select the correct options in the booking to fulfill the request and earn additional rewards!



What is the Habitat and how can I interact with it?

The Habitat is accessible via the world map, and is a sanctuary for all the Critters you have saved. Enter the Habitat to catch up with your Critters, building bonds with them via petting, playing, and washing them. Specific Critters can be called to you by ringing the bell, located near the entrance to the Habitat.

You can also customise the Habitat with items that you unlock and discover throughout Critter Café, creating the perfect place for your newest friends to play and rest.



How do I rescue Critters?

There are 35 Critters to rescue in Critter Café, all located in different puzzle-filled portals. As you play and progress, you’ll discover new portals to enter. In each portal, you must crack the puzzle and reach the end to find and rescue a new Critter. The more you progress, the more challenging the portal puzzles will become, and you’ll gradually receive new tools to help you complete them.

After being rescued, Critters automatically head to the Habitat to rest. You must meet the Critter in the Habitat once, before they can be selected to assist you in the café.
