What are the purple swirls?

In castle Sansa I am standing on a platform and there is a swirly purple thing above me. I hit and nothing happens. It looks like a vortex to another dimension. It has a black hole but nothing happens if i pass through it or hit it.

Later on youll find a certain ability related to them. Smack them again then and see what happens!
Until then they dont really do much outside give you a vague hint on where youll be going later.

When i hit them they did SQUAT, so I dont have that ability yet, so need to find 4 more yellow keys. grrr ill never finish this game
