edit: The only thing that pretty much is a must is at least 20-22 in ADP. This makes your life in DS2 much, much easier.
Fire - Scales with both INT and FTH
Lightning - Only scales with FTH
Dark - Scales with the lower of your INT or FTH
Magic - Only scales with INT
Enchanted - Only scales with INT, but instead of adding magic damage it removes all other damage sources and adds to physical damage.
Be sure to research your dream weapon before you commit to any stats. You'll be able to respec later (and once you have a lot of bonfire ascetics you can respec as many times as you like) but it's best to know what you want early on.
this^^ adaptability is usually the first stat i pump. That said, I rarely use any shields (only buckler or target shield). So, in case you want to dodge at all, you better have agility above 100 (which scales with ADP).
The Greatsword: Requires 28 Strength, 10 dex. The move set might take getting used to; it is slow, hits hard, and has decent range.
Mace: 12 Strength, 8 dex. Nice back up weapon.
Drangleic Shield: 16 Strength (good early / mid shield).
So focus on getting close to these stats:
Strength: 28+
End: 20+ (20 is the soft-cap, which you can keep it at, and maybe upgrade later).
Vit: 20+, making your way to 29. This is needed, because - with a strength build - you'll be using heavy weapons, and you're probably going to want decent armor.
Eventually, try to get the Royal Soldier's Ring. No Man's Wharf has a lot of stuff you'll want (the ring and the Greatsword). I, personally, didn't pump adaptability until after I did the above, because I kept blocking hits and only dodging bosses, which keeping my equip load as low as possible.
Ignore faith, intelligence, and attunement entirely.
Makes the game harder (enemies hit harder and have more health). I think you can reverse the decision by leaving the covenent or joining a new one, but I'm not sure.
