Anyone understand the point of poise?
I had a little break from Dark Souls 2 and i bought Dark Souls on sale(praise the gaben) and i still do not understand how poise works in DK2. One time i was stunlocked by dagger(from almost 2000hp to 0) and another i could roll or parry after first hit. I know there is ring that "dmg your poise" but cmon it is ridiculous. I cant even do one swing with greatsword because i get stunlocked by rapier

In Dark Souls 1 Poise was broken as hell.
what do you mean by broken?
Poise only applies when you attack. Only mid swing, the windup and recovery has no posie. It's perfectly viable to play with 0 poise now but having lots will still help if you know how to use it to your advantage.

Poise has reduced impact compared to the first game, but it exists. It's mechanics are explained in detail here: http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/poise

Basically, if you have no poise, any attack should stagger you some. If you have high poise (say, at least 94), you can take a 1-handed attack from most standard and all small weapons (poise damage less than 30). If your enemy is two-handing a weapon though, or can get in two-shots before you can get in 1, don't expect poise to help you.

Two-handed strong attacks just about always stagger somebody. The only exception might be the black flamestone dagger (which has a poise damage rating of 5).

Dark Souls: Poise was what controlled if you were staggered by an attack. Have enough of it, and attacks won't stagger you, you basically ignore them.

Dark Souls 2: Based on the above messages, it works like in Dark Souls, but only when you are actually launching an attack, and no other point.

One strategy for some harder bosses in DkS was simply to equip the entire Havel armor set, regardless of how heavy it made you, and just attack the boss till it died, or you felt you needed to heal. This is because the Havel armor set has absurdly high Poise stat. The boss would be unable to stop you from attacking it or healing off the damage.

Since Poise doesn't apply as often in DkS2, it is not as important. Can be of use, as Rhorge said, but not as important... though, armors with good defenses also tend to have good poise, so you'll usually end up getting both if you go for either.

each body part (arms, legs, head, chest) have a specific amount of poise, determined by the armor in said slot + any bonus from the ring of giants + your natural poise.

if your hand armor has 10 poise, and an attack hits you in the hand with 10 poise damage (look on the weapons, it says this figure), it will stagger you.

if you have a few points put into ADP youll have enough poise to take that hit to the hand and NOT stagger. if you have the ring of giants, it adds like 20 or 30 poise to said figure.

if i hit you in the chest, head, leg, AND hand, you will get the total value of each piece of equipment in adition to any natural poise.


this is why thrusting weapons and cestus are very OP. they essentially bypass poise, because they almost always ONLY hit 1 body part. if you dont think this is how poise works, go try it out. get a friend, red summon them, have them put on specific armor, hit a SINGLE body part, compare. but in turtle armor, you can take 2-4 hits from any rapier without staggering, and 2-3 hits from any buffed spear.

weapon swings have NO effect on poise. they did in DS1. they do not in DS2. once again, ignore these morons.

I offhand a rapier and wear alonne captain armor and other heavy armor, so your assumptions are wrong. My rapier doesn't stagger anybody not in cloth (unless I two-hand it), and it certainly doesn't stagger them more often if I hit them in the arm than the chest, which would be the case if your theory were correct.

I've seen the above theory before, and I think it exists because of what happens when you hit somebody in the head with a projectile. That particular situation may ignore the overall poise, but it doesn't apply to melee weapons.

I have no idea how poise works, but in Havel setup (clothes, shield, dragon tooth) I can poise through most attacks whilst I'm attacking. I do however fail at the same tactic when I'm using the smelter hammer. I believe it's because the windup for the smelter hammer is so extremely long, that they hit me before I have poise.
This would contradict the theory that you have poise on each body part and you would need to poise break only the body parts you actually hit.

This is just what I noticed when playing around with poise on the bridge.

edit: This was done on my high lvl char, with almost 70 in every stat.

The thing that really confuses me tho is this: When in full Havels almost any attack that has the potential to stunlock me can hit me at least twice before I'm able to run away. But the dragon tooth only gets one hit in, stuns, but the second hit will always be dodged as it is too slow. This strikes me as incredibly odd.

Listen to this guy. Max heavy armor and use a greatshield with a rapier, wear ring of giants, and turtle your pointless life away. Have fun playing ds2 like that lol

for example claymore : with 100 poise even you are stunned you can make roll after 2 hits,
with 0 poise you will get hits until your opponent lost all stamina

also 100+ poise can tank 1 light attack from small weapons also you can avoid other weapons stun lock better, I have played with robes with 0 poise and heavy armor with 100+ poise and there are HUGE diffrence in defense

lolno If you get hit more than twice from any weapon, you're beeing comboed with a well timed attack. You cannot be stunned for more than 2 hits anymore, unless there's horrible latency in play.

Poise is still poise just that it only works mid your attacks. It is especially effective on heavier weapons like UGS, Halberd, Great Hammer and Greataxes, mainly because if you use these weapons the poise DMG you receive is beeing halfed.
