What the heck does aldia want
Like I know that his end goal was cure the undead curse i get that, but with the scholar of the first sin update his entire story just lost me and i can't seem to figure out what the hell is going no with him. Why's he this weird blob? is thatjust a biproduct of his experiments? Why is he just suddenly reappearing after years of absence? {EDIT: Ok I'm liking this theory where he tried to ascend the throne of want because it's in his blood, but he is disfigured and tied to the flame since he didn't vanquish the great ones and is therefore not worthy, only showing up to the chosen undead since he sees them as worthy (and also is of the only people still lighiting bonfires}

But for my main question: It's clear at first he wants you to take Vendrick's place to stop the curse (but also he understands the cycle and realizes that won't change anything?) and then he attacks you at the throne of want. I just really don't follow...

The fact that he's a blob is definitely because of his experiments. The game makes clear he was once a person, but disappeared one day. So... he basically transformed into the blob as part of his attempts to free himself of the Undead Curse. That may have been unintended as he says that he failed to defy fate.

I am not sure why he attacks, but I figured it was some kind of test to see if the player is worthy of going in Aldia's footsteps and trying to find a cure that doesn't involve lighting the flame, Aldia doesn't want the Age of Dark to come to pass so he wants to make sure the player is equal to him in power.

He doesn't want you to take the throne. And would even try to stop you by attacking you.

When you take the throne, you can either relink the fire or let it die (much like the heralds' "you can either embrace or renounce this" dialogue) but if you choose any if the two choices, the cycle of the Curse will still continue. If the Dark age would come, enough souls and humanity will gather on the first flame and reignite it on its own.

Aldia believe that there is a way to break the Curse through other means. He found a way how but he lost everything in the process and all he can do is watch and guide our chosen undead.

Aldia appears to be a tree, similar to the Fallen Giants. Dead but still alive. He no longer needs souls to live (which explains why he does not drop any when "killed").

To how we find a way to free humanity from the Curse is a whole new journey. This time with Aldia to guide us.

@erik jay god this would all be so much simpler if aldia wasn't such a pretentious fire globule and just explain what he wants. but i guess in the end i think it doesn't really matter to him as long as he gets results out of this "experiment"

He was explaining his goal to us while also telling some facts about the flame, like how humans assumed a "Fleeting Form" during the age of fire.

The players' choice does matter to him. His attempts are no longer an experiment. He truly wishes the player to leave the throne find a way to make mankind free from the curse without being dependent on the First Flame.

But if the player does accept the throne, he will be back in the next cycle and would do the same attempt to the next would-be monarchs.

Oh good point, if he really didn't care then he wouldn't have attacked you. Sorry that was kinda dumb of me lol. And i guess he did speak as straight forward as someone can in a dark souls game
