Shrine of Winter Help-won't open

First play-through, killed all 4 lord bosses, embraced all the souls (including the one left on the ground from Freya) and collected 1.5M souls total. I also traded Freya's soul for the web sword.

Went to the door and it wouldn't open. Restarted game, computer, no dice. Burned ascetic on Freya and Rotten and killed them again (didn't get another "soul embraced" from Freya but I did from Rotten). Now I have collected 1.8M souls and at least 5 great souls. Door still won't open. I just get the "Closed" message.

I've looked everywhere for solutions to this but I can't find an identical case. My only thought is that I may have screwed myself by trading the web sword before going to the winter shrine?

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Most of the time this problem comes from people not touching the red orb after the Freja fight. You HAVE to touch the red orb after the fight in order to embrace the soul. Restarting also solves it sometimes.

I double checked and the red orb was gone so I must have picked it up (unless it disappears? But I'm almost sure I remember picking it up) I also restarted.

Any other possibilities?

Not sure if it involves the opening of the Shrine of Winter - but did you rest at the primal bonfires and the flames are lit in the mansion?

I did rest at the fires. What's this about a mansion and flames?

That didn't work either. It's the shrine with all the fog after you warp right? Man it would suck if I have to start a new character.

Waiiit, do you mean the door which opens to the snake statue you can touch or a door after you touch the statue and go to a snowy area?

If that second door is closed it's because you don't own the DLC and need the item (it's optional).

which door exactly are you trying to get past?

I go to the Shrine of Winter, touch the snake fountain, get transported to a snowy/foggy area. There are 2 rows of graves and a single building. I go up to the door of the building and a message comes up near the tope of my screen that says "Closed".

thats the DLC area. gotta pay for it to get past it.

You know, I never thought about how to a new player, this would be incredibly confusing if you didn't know it was a DLC entrance/didn't read the walls.
