Whats a good back-up weapon for a strength build?
Right now I am digging that greatsword.. it mgiht be my FF7 nostaglia, but I love lugging that thing around.. my problem is that I keep banging it on everything in the game when I am killing stuff, so I want a good back up if I get close to at risk using it during a session. I was thinking that drangelic sword.. I was using it prior to finding the greatsword, but it seems to scale better with dex.. any ideas? thanks for the help

right now I just got access to the lost bastille, after crushing no-man's wharf, but I think I have other options to go to other places right now.

I recommend a Mace. Lenigrast sells one.

You can buy another one from a merchant later on.
For pvp, try picking up varangian sword at no man's warf as an off-hand backup.

Craftsmans hammer or blacksmith hammer :p

craftsman hammer: best hammer in game, strike, needs twinkling
bandit axe: high base damage and scaling with decent weight
estoc: pair with leo to make quick work of many, 3 weight, fast

bandit axe has armor piercing effect like maces and nice damage but crap reach ive used it all game and its decent specially when infused.

mace another option.

str mostly focuses the big stuff. dex has way more choice!!

Like others have said, the mace Lenigrast sells. It's an excellent PvE STR weapon (not so good in PvP). It has very good str scaling, deals blunt damage (and most of the troublesome enemies through the game are weak to blunt damage), and can be upgraded with regular titanite. Not to mention you get it very early in the game, so you can start upgrading it right on.

Strike or blunt damage is no longer the big gimme it was when the game released. I started playing the game dagger or scimitar and it was painful.

I came back recently and mobs that were previously a PIA are a breeze with slash weapons and even the dagger. Dagger with dps boost ring hits hard and fast due to its insane counter damage. I can kill mobs as fast as with a Greatsword. The scimitar is insane.

You know I am probably going to start over. I just realized I missed my chance to get that sublime bone dust for my estus flask. I am pretty sure I really need that for healing.

Not really, there are many who have completed the game without even upgrading their flask.

As for backup, probably mace/club is the easiest to get which will utilize the STR scaling to it's full potential.

You can always carry or just menu swap to another big weapon if you have the stamina for it or if you're fast enough to menu swap for that matter.

I use the Club, purchased from Merchant Hag Melentia. When I'm not clubbing little guys to death, I use the Large Club. Both are excellent options in the earlier portions of the game, as well as later.

ok you convinced me to stick it out. I have like 40 life gems anyhow to top me of. I will probably get the mace and upgrade that. I don't know if the amce or club is better, but I'm using the mace because my cleric loves his.[he is faith based but for some magical reason, fth increases its damage even though the item card doesn't say it does]

If I'm not mistaken, the club has better strength scaling than the mace does, but I think the mace might have a little more reach than the club.
