Said to belong to a prince who appears in an ancient tale.
There are numerous variations of the story of the prince who wandered the lands and eventually became Undead.
The majority of these tales end in tragedy. but there are some exceptions."
Consider this: Drangleic and the events you play through are most certainly long after the events of DS1. The original prince ricard was kiilled by you, became famous and his legend was told throughout the lands. Thus his trademark weapon, ricard's rapier became a desirable and sought after weapon for the nobility (of Astora?). In the days of Drangleic this weapon was most likely used by tseldora nobility, which were transformed into spiders/spider hosts by the duke.
It might be possible that brightstone Cave was part of Tseldora which itself might have been formerly Astora.
Just a theory, but I think it sounds reasonable.
A lot of unique weapons could be cheap knock-offs if you saw them in Dark Souls as well. Avelyn is one of them.
That would explain the alternative appearance.
