Question about the Old Leo ring

First question, does it work with daggers and secondly, is counter damage a riposte or what, I'm confused.

It works with everything(unlike in ds1 where it worked only with thrust attacks), counter damage is damage that been dealt while enemy's attacking animation.

Both wikis mention only thrust attack but now it works on elemental dmg as well.

Then I'm probably wrong, ring's description doesn't mentions type of attacks((at least on russian localization).
